Shelf Styling Tips
Shelf Styling is one of my favorites. Especially when it comes to the decorating for the holidays. This is not the end all be all to shelf styling, just my approach. And at the end of the day, if you love it…that’s all that matters.
My Tips and Tricks:
▪️Mix Materials - Ceramic, Organic, Metal and Rope are all items I used within this shelf. I try to spread them out throughout so it’s well balanced. If you had all ceramic pieces at the top, the shelf would feel unbalanced.
▪️Arrangement - Arrange your items in a triangular shape or zig zag pattern, keeping the eye moving throughout the shelf. I try to group items in odd numbers (3, 5 or 7), but as you can see here…isn’t always the case.
▪️Color - I always try to have 3 pops of color distributing evenly throughout, making the shelves feel unified and cohesive. In this shelf, I chose burnt orange, displayed in the stems, art & hello autumn sign.
▪️Greenery - This is a MUST when styling any space in my opinion. Plants give warmth, color, texture and LIFE to any space! Whether you have a green thumb like me or prefer to stick with faux plants, both work! I tend to integrate a little bit of both, as shown here. (Yes, that Fiddle Leaf is real - he’s my baby!)
▪️Height & Dimension - Stacking & Layering items gives a lot of visual depth to the shelf. Using objects that vary in height helps you achieve that triangular shape desired. Do you have smaller items you want to integrate? No problem…using books or plates for these smaller objects makes them feel grounded.
You don’t always get the perfect look the first time, in fact…that rarely happens. Sometimes over the course of a week, I will rearrange things until I get that balanced, simple, cohesive look! I express myself through decor and at the end of the day, if I’m styling spaces with intention, I’m always happy with the result.
